Nextmune

Scratching, licking, ear infections, or recurring skin problems… Many pet owners wonder:

"Could my dog or cat have allergies?"

This short quiz will help you get a first indication. Answer the 5 questions below and find out whether allergies might be playing a role in your pet’s symptoms.

Question 1: Does your pet regularly itch?

Think about:

  • Frequent scratching
  • Excessive licking of paws
  • Chewing at the skin or tail base
  • Rubbing against furniture

Answer:

  • 🔘 Yes, daily or several times a week
  • 🔘 Occasionally
  • 🔘 Rarely or never

👉 What this means: Persistent itching without an obvious cause is one of the most common signs of allergies.

Question 2: Does your pet have recurring ear problems?

For example:

  • Dirty ears returning frequently
  • Head shaking
  • Redness or unpleasant odor from the ears

Answer:

  • 🔘 Yes, several times a year
  • 🔘 Sometimes
  • 🔘 Never

👉 What this means: Recurrent ear infections are often linked to underlying allergies, especially in dogs.

Question 3: Do you notice skin changes?

Such as:

  • Redness (especially belly, groin, armpits)
  • Recurring hot spots
  • Hair loss
  • Thickened or darkened skin

Answer:

  • 🔘 Yes, regularly
  • 🔘 Occasionally
  • 🔘 No

👉 What this means: Allergies often show up on the skin. Redness on the paws, belly, and face is particularly common.

Question 4: Are the symptoms seasonal?

For example:

  • Worse in spring or summer
  • Flare-ups after walks in grass
  • Symptoms increasing in warm weather

Answer:

  • 🔘 Yes, clearly seasonal
  • 🔘 Not sure
  • 🔘 No, all year round

👉 What this means: Seasonal symptoms may suggest environmental allergens such as pollen or grasses. Year-round symptoms can point toward house dust mites or even food allergies.

Question 5: Do the symptoms keep coming back despite treatment?

For example:

  • Temporary improvement with medication
  • Symptoms return quickly after stopping treatment
  • Antibiotics help briefly, but the problem returns

Answer:

  • 🔘 Yes
  • 🔘 Sometimes
  • 🔘 No

👉 What this means: Recurring skin or ear issues that only temporarily improve strongly suggest an underlying allergy.
