Stomatology

Let’s talk oral disorders

Stomatology

Periodontal disease is common in dogs and cats. Around 80% of pets have dental problems and may show symptoms such as: bad breath, signs of irritation in the mouth, difficulty eating, loss of appetite, excessive drooling, discolored teeth, tartar, irritability, loose teeth or teeth falling out.

The inflammation or infection causes weakening or loss of the support structures of the teeth. Buildup of plaque and calculus leads to gingivitis, an early sign of periodontal disease. With time calculus builds up under the gums and causes them to separate from the teeth. In cats a painful process called tooth resporption (TR), can be seen.

This is a process by which the dentin erodes and eventually becomes irreparably destroyed. Make a general clinical investigation, an extensive oral examination including radiographs, removal of plaque and calculus and necessary repair of removal of teeth under anesthesia.

Try to uncover any primary disease which can result in periodontal problems. Breed, diet, chewing behavior, developmental defects, pregnancy, fever in very young animals, any infection and several diseases (hypothyroidism, FeLV/FIV, FCV, pemphigus, renal, heart, liver and kidney disease) or general compromised immunity can contribute to poor oral cavity health.

The best way to keep the oral cavity healthy is by daily brushing of the teeth and gums. Annual thorough examinations including radiographs are recommended for maintenance of oral health and early detection of disease. Nextmune offers a range of well documented oral hygiene products.
