How does Artuvetrin® Therapy work?
Artuvetrin® Therapy works by giving repeated doses of allergens that stimulate an immune response and lead to the build-up of immunological tolerance. It is the only treatment that alters the course of an allergic disease while also controlling the symptoms. Compliance with the allergy treatment plan is key to success, and will accelerate recovery and allergy relief.
How do you administer Artuvetrin® Therapy?
Artuvetrin® Therapy is administered subcutaneously at increasing doses and increasing intervals to a maximum of 1.0 ml every 4 weeks. The first dose is 0.2 ml, and this is gradually increased to a maximum of 1.0 ml, with longer intervals between each dose. When a dose of 1.0 ml is reached, after 12 weeks, then a fixed dose of 1.0 ml is administered on a monthly basis. In some cases, this treatment schedule is too fast for the patient. In such cases, it is possible to deviate from the standard schedule.
Allergy is a chronic disease so the treatment must continue for the entire lifetime of the patient. A vial of Artuvetrin lasts 10 months, meaning a new vial of immunotherapy is needed every 10 months to continue treatment and to ensure adequate relief of symptoms.
Sublingual immunotherapy
This is an alternative to the subcutaneous Artuvetrin® Therapy injection. The sublingual form is administered by spraying the immunotherapy into the mouth, between the cheek and gum, on a daily basis. No food or drink is allowed for 10 minutes before and 10 minutes after administration. One vial of sublingual immunotherapy lasts for 3–6 months (depending on the patient’s weight) and contains a maximum of 12 allergens per vial.
Sublingual immunotherapy is a good option in the following situations:
- Patient or owner has aversion to needles
- Patient has adverse events with injections
- Patient does not show improvements with subcutaneous immunotherapy
- Daily administration is the preferred routine
In some cases deviation from the schedule is recommended. For example, if the patient’s symptoms start or worsen immediately after an injection, then subsequent volumes can be adjusted lowered. Symptomatic medication can also be given, as required, to alleviate symptoms and calm the skin. Another example is when symptoms return 1–2 weeks before the next injection. This means the interval is too long, thus the timing can be adjusted to, for example, 0.8 ml every 3 weeks or 0.5 ml every 2 weeks. Adjusting the interval is only recommended if the patient was already on the maintenance dose (that is, 1 ml every 4 weeks). Our allergy experts will advise on any adjustments or specific cases – contact us here.
Artuvetrin® Therapy can be started at any time, however it is recommended that the skin symptoms are under control before commencing treatment.
No. Symptomatic medication does not need to be stopped. It does not affect the efficacy of the immunotherapy and therefore can be continued alongside it. Such medications can help to keep the skin calm and under control in the initial (increasing dosage) phase of Artuvetrin® Therapy.
A multimodal approach to allergy is very helpful. In conjunction with Artuvetrin® Therapy, other products can help control the symptoms as required. Medicated shampoos, ear cleansers and essential fatty acids all support the skin barrier and help prevent and treat skin infections. – Read more about these products and/or order here.
Improvements are usually noticed after 4–6 months. In some cases, improvement can occur after as little as 1 month. If there is no improvement at all after 6 months, please contact us (link).
No. The treatment is life-long and should not be stopped. Stopping treatment often allows the symptoms to return, and re-starting the treatment from scratch may not be as effective.
