Oral diseases

Let’s talk oral disorders

Symptoms and diagnosis

Periodontal disease is common in dogs and cats. Around 80% of pets have dental problems and may show symptoms such as: bad breath, signs of irritation in the mouth, difficulty eating, loss of appetite, excessive drooling, discolored teeth, tartar, irritability, loose teeth, or tooth loss.

The inflammation or infection causes weakening or loss of the support structures of the teeth. Buildup of plaque and calculus leads to gingivitis (swollen red gums), an early sign of periodontal disease. With time calculus builds up under the gums and causes them to separate from the teeth. In cats a painful process called tooth resorption (TR), can be seen. This is a process by which the dentin erodes and eventually becomes irreparably destroyed. The vet needs to make a general clinical examination and an extensive oral examination and treatment possibly including x-rays, removal of plaque and calculus and necessary repair or removal of teeth under anesthesia.

The best way to keep the oral cavity healthy is by daily brushing of the teeth and gums. Annual thorough examinations including x-rays are recommended for maintenance of oral health and early detection of disease. Nextmune offers a range of well documented oral hygiene products.
